Who Needs a Hard Drive?
Aug 15th, 2007 by Anthony

Before I moved over to the Dosh Network, I worked for Tap Media which covered the latest web 2.0 startups and sites. Covering this industry, I quickly became familiar with a number of powerful online apps that allowed me to complete all of my computing tasks anywhere I wanted without using my hard drive.
In this glorious web 2.0 age there is pretty much an online equivalently for every single one of your regular applications.
Now as a blogger, I continue to use these wonderful tools which allow me to work anywhere with just an internet connection and a internet browser. So here are my favorite online apps that make my hard drive look obsolete!
Word Processors
Google Docs - Although it may look a bit bare if pretty much gives you all the features you need! And without all the extra crap MS Word has, you may find you are more productive using Google Docs. Plus, if you use Gmail it will integrate perfectly.
ThinkFree - If you want an online equivalent of Word than this might be for you. You also get a nice 1gb of storage space.
Zoho Writer - Zoho has a huge array of online apps including this handy word processor. Also available is a desktop version!
Online Storage
Box.net - You get 1gb of free space and you can upgrade for more. I like the ability to embed Box.net features on my Netvibes personalized homepage.
OmniDrive - Offers 1gb of storage and ability to upgrade to 1tb. You can’t beat its awesome drag and drop features for super quick uploading. Plus you can open your docs anywhere - even if you don’t have the required software installed.
eSnips - Although they offer 5gb of free storage space, its not as simple and user friendly as other solutions. Simple is better!
Gmail - You cannot go past what has to be the best solution for email. No one else has been able to organize email in such a productive way.
Yahoo, Hotmail etc - Sorry these just don’t cut it.
Communication
Meebo - Forget using multiple IM clients. Meebo supports AIM, Yahoo, MSN and Google Talk
Jaiku - Just like Twitter but without the constant emails and downtime. Communicate with a number of people all at once. Check out my Jaiku
Pownce - Just like Twitter but you can skin it and offers the ability to share pictures and files.
Collaborate
ConceptShare - think of this app as a whiteboard that a group of people can all access at once. I use this all the time to work on the development of design projects.
WriteBoard - A collaborative writing app. Easily share edit and compare documents.
Campfire - Real time group chat and file sharing.
Desktop
DesktopTwo - A flash based desktop. Take your files, documents and everything else anywhere you go.
EyeOS - Kind of like replacing your entire OS with a web based version…well not quite but its getting there.
RSS Readers
Google Reader - Much like Gmail and boasts a intuitive layout and user experience.
Bloglines - Used to be a big player but is now starting to lose market share (maybe because of personalized homepages).
To-Do Lists and Organization
Ta-Da - Super, Super Simple. This app is recommended by many time management experts - plus it works on the iPhone!
BackPack - The perfect app for managing all your….stuff!
Photo Editing and Managment
Picnik - Edit your photos online with crop, resizing and retouching tools.
Flickr - The grand daddy of photo hosting and sharing.
Start Pages and Personalized Homepages
iGoogle - Choose from a great range of “gadgets” that can easily be added to your personalized Google homepage.
Netvibes - Available in many different languages and huge range of widgets are available to be embedded.
StartSpot - Dosh’s own personalized startpage solution (still in development). Coming soon!
Calenders
30Boxes - A simple yet feature rich online calender solution. Plus get reminders of your events via SMS.
Google Calender - Create and share calenders plus it integrates nicely with other Google tools.
Remember the Milk - Never Forget! This nice little service works by itself or use with other online calenders like Google Calender. Did I also mention you can use it offline too using Google Gears!
Scrybe - Definitely the most advanced online calender. Works both while your online or offline and features a cool PaperSync feature. Unfortunately its in Private Beta and if youre not in the industry like me, you may have problems getting an invite.
Diagrams
Gliffy - Create Visio style diagrams with this simple Diagram solution.
Video Editing
JumpCut - Upload your videos and add effects, titles and transitions!
Eyespot - Mix and share your videos all from your browser
